Thanksgiving and why I do not appreciate it.

Would you like to share a meal with us?
    Sure, we're hungry!
We brought corn and other stuff..
Cool. Never had corn before, but it looks good. Turkey, corn, potatoes, pumpkin...good stuff.
    Indeed. Let's eat.

    * later ...*

Did you come to share another meal with us and repay us for being nice to you when you first arrived here?
Nope, this time we brought guns.
    Why?
Because we want to live here now. And you guys are annoying us. * bam bam *

    Busy

Sorry for the recent lack of blogging (and responding to emails) - been very busy with school and teaching, among other things. As soon as I get my schedule settled and figure out what I am doing this semester, I'll be back iA.

and to those who can't forgive I say skar alina :D

(Thank you Alg. Now our blogs look similar!)

    Disturbing

I wasn't going to update today but I have just been informed of a disturbing occurance involving my blog.

So apparently when you open my blog page from the UAE the layout is blue with palm trees?! Until you refresh the page, then you get the true pink layout with flowers (cheesy, I know, but I've gotten used to it and there is nothing nicer as a substitute).

Anyway, to anyone who might be confused and wondering what's up with the blue plam trees layout: I did not put that layout on my blog, and I don't know who did. It might be some glitch that's making it appear that way, because when you refresh the page the true layout shows up fine. My real layout is bright pink with pink and white flowers everywhere.  Hope that clears up any confusion inshaAllah.

    Görüşürüz inşallah.

    Much Rejoicing

Alhumdulilah! I am delighted to announce the fact that soul-sista Amz has arrived home in the UAE safely after an exciting summer vacation to Algeria. What makes it all the more exciting is the fact that she will commence, as soon as is humanely possible after a long journey, to MSN and write me long, intricately detailed stories of family adventures, attending weddings, going to the beach, and most importantly, pasta-consuming. I am waiting with utmost anticipation.

This blog post serves two purposes: one, to express my happy sentiments regarding her safe arrival home, and two, to serve as a means of pressuring her to 'start talkin'. It is obvious that the first purpose has been achieved; the second, however, won't happen for at least another day due to time zone differences. InshaAllah khair.

Without further ado, Amz, git online. You have been terribly missed.

Lame reaction to World Cup and Apricots

Hmm.. so Italy won the World Cup . Better than France winning it, anyhow. What awful behavior Mr. Zidane exhibited today - I was so happy seeing him receive that red card and have to walk off in shame; how dumb to do something like that in your last game ever. I had no idea that France's Franck Ribery is Muslim until today! Subhanallah - I'm wondering if Portugal's Simao Sabrosa is Muslim; he had a tattoo that looked like it said الرحيم  on his left arm. I can't be bothered to look him up; plus, any good sources of info about him are in Portugese anyway which I regret to say I do not speak.

Yesterday we decided to experiment with some new cuisine; we had a 24 lb. box of fresh apricots on hand and some good lamb. A tasty Algerian/Moroccan tagine dish immediately came to mind. I know in the North African version of meat and fruit tagines you are supposed to used dried fruit, like dried apricots and prunes, but (one of) our Persian cook book(s) says that you can use fresh fruits so we did! And it was pretty good walhumdulilah. I am definitely making it again sometime, and will try other versions using other fruits inshallah.

Next order of business: currently reading the Complete Works of P.G. Wodehouse for the umpteenth time. It's a great book; the author is absolutely hilarious and not one story has failed to make me laugh at least five times.

Also currently missing AlgerianLass greatly. Technology really sucks sometimes.
Also currently wishing certain people would go online more often *hint hint WD* but Allahul musta3aan.

I recently found out that my great Aunt is a good letter-writer and enjoys exchanging letters every so often, so I've been writing to her. She lives out in Montana - 'out West', relative to us anyway. I'm not very familiar with that side of the family; I wonder how it would be to meet them... I can hardly even keep straight who's-who. I should draw myself a family tree sometime.

Erm... I knew I had something of importance to say but I cannot remember what it was. Which might bring into question its importance.... anyway...

I've been working on my Turkish - I can actually understand very simple sentences and it has been a very fun (albeit often frustrating) learning experience. I hope I can get much better inshallah. So far I have read about Oktay who skipped work to take care of Ayse who is sick - Oktay went shopping, stopped at the post office, then bought some medicine for Ayse at the eczane (pharmacy). Oktay also spoke to his friend Ahmet about Ayse being sick - in response, Ahmet visited Ayse and asked her how she was, wishing her good health and a speedy recovery after she told him she was "iyi değil" (not good). Later on in the course of the story, Ayse and Oktay were going out to the cinema, and were planning to meet Ahmet at a party later that night. Ayse and Oktay also went out to a restaurant, and ordered a meat dish, a grilled fish, two salads, a glass of red wine (rolls eyes) and some water. The waiter was very polite to them btw. Finally, I read about two friends discussing a bad vacation at Burdum where the weather was cold, windy, and rainy, but where the hotel was beautiful and new, and the sea was clean and beautiful. Yes, the same adjectives were used over and over, but that is to establish familiarity I suppose.

Useless enough post for you? Prolly. Oh well. "Culture, National Liberation, and Islam" coming soon iA.

And a shoutout to Umm_Ali for many reasons :-D .. JAK for all your comments sister, it is great to see you active in the blog-o-sphere once again!

    Blog-dormancy.

Blog inactivity due to overwhelming amount of scholarship essays that must be written. On time.

    Please excuse.

    Will be back soon insha'Allah.

Thinking about giving this blog a makeover too... we shall see, wallahu a3lam.

    Righty, cheerio.

Oh and by the way, I was rooting for Trinidad and Tobago, against England. Why would I want England to get it? But they won. Go figure. When you gots the money for proper training and stuff, there's a high likelihood you'll do better in a match against a poor country, non?!

    Türkçe biliyor musun?

Merhaba everyone and günaydın....Mutluyum elhamdulilah, for the most part.

Ben very busy-um these past few days. And Alg shall be happy to know that I have gotten back to working on my Turkish !!!! Elhamdulilah !! ;)

So far I have officially covered Standard Word Order, the Two Main Rules, Vowel Harmony, Agglutination, Plurals/Plural forms, and I'm busting my suffixes like there's no tomorrow, fer cryin out laoud     [laoud = Minnesotan way of saying loud].

Anyway, take a look at some of these long Turkısh words..and I mean looong:

Yaramazlaştırılamıyabilenlerdenmişsiniz; You seem to be one of those who is incapable of being naughty.

Koşturulmamalıymış; They say he shouldn't be forced to run.

Afyonkarahisarlilastiramayabileceklerimizdenmissiniz  means "apparently you may be amongst the ones that we will not be able to make a Afyonkarahisar citizen."  Yeah, it's all one word. Scary? I'd say so.

Like all Turkic languages, Turkish is agglutinative, i.e., grammatical relations are indicated by the addition of suffixes to stems. Suffixes are strung together one after another, resulting on occasion in very long words.Turkish is agglutinative, i.e., it adds affixes to roots in order to express grammatical relations.

Well arkadaşlar, I'm out like a.... burnt light bulb?! I'm out like someone trying to translate one of the above words. Görüşürüz for now, Allaha ismarladık ....

    Llama Replacements and Grandparents Missed

Thanks for all the comments on the previous post. I think I should do more of my Microsoft Paint drawings; they bring out my true artistic talent and basically enlighten everyone who views them in so many ways. I'm sure you would all agree.

Moving swiftly on: Do you need a new guardian llama by any chance? If so, check out the Guardian Llama Replacement Program here. Their program objectives include:

    - To assist those livestock producers who have suffered financial losses due to predators and to assist these livestock producers in their predator management.

    - To set a precedent and insure the guardian quality and superior performance of all llamas placed through the Program.

    - To abolish the indiscriminate selling and use of unsuitable llamas being marketed as "guardians," and to monitor and screen all llamas used as potential guardians.

Sooo uhh..yeah. Get a guardian llama.

    ~Meehad Hamad "Ya Tayyabal Galb"

    ----------

Summer is a very 'timesicky' time for me, as it probably is for many people. Haven't seen the family for two years, which makes me cry, but when I realize that others haven't seen their families for 6 or 7 years, or more, I .... am grateful.

Today I spoke to my Grandad on the phone; he's in Egypt right now. Can't live anywhere else permanently  because he only has Palestinian travel documents (watheeqah - no citizenship). Although it would be ideal if he could move to Jordan to live with my Aunts there, the Jordanian authorities would not let him. They would arrest him (an 81 year old man who can barely walk ), or would shut down and confiscate my uncle's business that would be sponsoring his visa. Yeah.

It's difficult to speak to him with a steady voice and no tears..I couldn't do it today.

I used to spend a lot of time with him just talking over coffee or tea, back when they were staying with us in the UAE; he would tell me about his youthful days in Palestine, prior to 1948. He took place in the '36 general strike, got shot various times, saw people killed and tortured, worked a variety of odd jobs starting when he was 7 years old to help support the family, taught himself to read and write by selling newspapers, and walked from Khalil to Cairo with a bullet in his leg to marry my Grandma. He also had a good fashion sense [still does :'( ], and has told me many times how to differentiate between a European and Arabian horse and saddle/reins used for each. All this, among many, many, other things. He's now an old man, who wishes more than anything to spend his last days among his children and grandkids. I pray to Allah that his desire will be fulfilled, both for his and my sake.

He takes his coffee very strong and sweet, and I figured out the secret to making it for him just right, exactly the way he likes it. Start out by sweetening the water with three tablespoons of sugar in your bakraj, and after you've added the four or so tablespoons of coffee and all just dump in a few more shakes of sugar (and by shakes I mean a lot ) .. Don't bother tasting it because you'll probably get knocked out. Pour it in the finjaan and serve it, then bask in the praise "This girl knows how to make the best coffee...she is mumtazah" he would say and give me a hug and laugh. I would kiss his hand and head, then return to the kitchen to make normal coffee for the rest of us.

    Many memories...

I miss him, my grandma, and the rest of the family very much. Allah yjma3na feehum 3ala khair...hakatha heeyal 7ayat.

    Sword Dunes

I am pleased to inform you that seif dunes get their name from the Arabic word for sword, 'seif'.

    Very cool.

"If there is abundant sand and a strong, steady wind, the sand streams into longitudinal dunes (also called seif dunes, after the Arabic word for "sword"), whose axis lies parallel to the wind direction. The Rub al Khali, an erg in the Arabian Peninsula, contains seif dunes that stretch for nearly 200 km and reach height of over 300 km."

Note here that the word "erg" comes from the Arabic ('irq - عرق ) literally meaning artery; arteries of the earth.

    Longitudinal and transverse dunes

    Seif.gif

Longitudinal dunes, also called Seif dunes, elongate parallel to the prevailing wind, possibly caused by a larger dune having its smaller sides blown away. Seif dunes are sharp-crested and are common in the Sahara. They range up to 300 m (900 ft) in height and 300 km (200 mi) in length.

Seif dunes are thought to develop from barchans if a change of wind direction occurs. The new wind direction will lead to the development of a new wing and the overdevelopment of one of the original wings. If the prevailing wind then becomes dominant for a lengthy period of time the dune will revert to its barchan form, with one exaggerated wing. Should the strong wind then return the exaggerated wing will further extend so that eventually it will be supplied with sand when the prevailing wind returns. The wing will continue to grow under both wind conditions, thus producing a seif dune. On a seif dune the slip face develops on the side facing away from the strong wind, while the slip face of a barchan faces the direction of movement. In the sheltered troughs between highly developed seif dunes barchans may be formed because the wind is unidirectional.

A transverse dune is horizontal to the prevailing wind, probably caused by a steady buildup of sand on an already existing minuscule mound.

    Way too late

Why is it that the best blog posts, or pieces of writing in general, happen to come to me so late at night when I should be going to bed (in order to get up for Fajr on time) ? Subhanallah.

"I don't have anything to write about".

Because my life is not a tragedy, a drama, a soap opera, from which I can pluck heartwrenching incidents out of my daily events and vent about them on here with the confidence that they will keep readers interested. The stuff I talk about from my own life is actually quite boring, and I good as heck know it : D !
Am I complaining because my life isn't interesting enough? Of course not.

What am I saying then? Several things actually:

    1) It's way too late to be on here, seeing as that I have to get up early to go teach third-graders the difference between "haa'" and "taa' marbootah" .

    2) The things that do worry me, the things that "keep me awake at night", the things I get frustrated about and feel the urge to blog about have very little to do with myself. (Well, in a very real yet seemingly roundabout way they do ). In other words, I cannot fill my blog entries with twisted stories of overbearing pain-in-the-neck parents, impossible-to-reach loves, deep dark secrets about friends, rumors and love dramas regarding people at school or work... I do not have the time for such things, which means that I do not get involved in such things, which in turn renders my social life quite uninteresting in that regard, at least in the usual way people might think of as interesting (and who is to define what interesting is versus what is not.. Could it not be that a very tranquil social life, with the occasional ups and downs, is not interesting by a different perspective? Yes.).

But at the end of the day, I believe most sane people, whether they are like me or are the type who prefer to place themselves in the midst of every social drama everywhere (or who are so unfortunate as to "end up" involved in everything), would agree that I come out on the winning side of this whole thing. The reasons for this are quite obvious, I believe.

Comments? Comment box, email, phone call, Facebook, Raslny message... just say something. Of use.

Avenging the Casbah [ beware: long post]

PS: At the next MSA meeting, we're actually going to have real food!! All thanks goes to GAPSA. Joint meeting. See, they are rich, while we are poor (though I think the real reason they have better food  is that they actually know what the word 'food' means - enough with the organic oreo cookies and alternative soda, MSA).

And it's not Hom-iss. It's Hummmmmmmus. And there is no such thing as "sun-dried tomato hom-iss, or spinach garlic hom-iss". So don't ask me if I've checked out the Middle Eastern section at Cub Foods.

Speaking of hummus, providing "Garlic Hummus" with "Crispy Garlic Pita Chips" at the meetings does not actually make me feel at home. So thanks for the thought and effort, but that's just lame.

Sorry, I'll shut up about MSA. I swear.

Attention All Algerian People: I need someone to translate Cheb Khaled's "Abdel Kader" song for me. Really. It's like listening to a foreign language.

If you happened to click on my profile information, (meaning you have WAY too much free time on your hands, so shut this window immediately) you will notice that I have noted the countries I have lived in, and the ones I have traveled to. And, you might have noticed how it says "Oman, Turkey,  Europe".

    This is my revenge.

My petty way of avenging all of them; by denying Europe the prestige and specificity it demands from the rest of the world. "We aren't one homogenous body", "every country is different" etc etc...and I write the word "Europe" as though they were just that: one large conglomerate chunk of lithosphere.

    My revenge.

I am a dissident. I force myself to live within the truth, however false that truth may be. As long as it's not Europe's truth. Ha. (A very bad way to think, but definitely an easy way..doesn't take much effort to think about things that way).

    My revenge.

I have only landed in the airports of a few European countries, but I claim to have visited "Europe".

    My revenge. My petty revenge.

Oh! I just thought of something!

Why is Fouad a man's name? (for those of you who don't know, Fouad means heart).  Any ideas?

Furthermore, the word for bravery in Arabic is female. Shaja3ah شجاعة . Beauty is male. Jamal جمال . I never had the time or state of mind to ponder these things very deeply.  So I'm doing it now. As you may have noticed.

My cousin knew a girl who had the unfortunate name of Gharam غرام (deep love). I never gave much thought to the issue of naming in Islam, or Arabic. It is an exhilarating feeling to think about the challenge of living up to your name. If your name is a good name (which might be a weirdly difficult task for Ms. Gharam, but aanyway).

I'm serious here. Think about your name. What does it mean? Can you live up to what your name denotes? It is one way to think about the way you live your life. A better point of reference would be Islam, but your name probably ties into Islam in some way, anyway, so I'll stop rambling now.

MSA, Marriage, Death, and Sleeping In

Boy, I do love our student government *sarcasm, sarcasm*.

MSA ( and that includes me) just voted on a new slogan for ourselves, and probably due mostly to an intense lack of interest in anything remotely related to MSA activities, the final slogan choices were rather sad, if I may say so myself. Not that I could have come up with anything better. (Amz, you could!).

Now, we're "MSA: The Effective Way to Have Your Say" . Yeah.

I voted on the one that sounded the least cheesy:"MSA: We've Got Your Back." But I was obviously outnumbered. Shoot.

I know who's not coming back to MSA next term if everything goes as planned, iA: me.

I sure will miss wasting hours of perfectly good time debating issues that a) won't be changed anyway despite our numerous position statements and resolutions and b) bore the heck out of any sane person who actually knows what it means to do fun and useful things with their hours. (We have this saying in Arabic:
ناس فاضيين ...بيتفلسفوا عالفاضي ). I think some people need to get a life.

    But enough about MSA.

WD: So, you want to marry my cousin? Sure, I'll getchya'll hooked up. No problemo. I'll be reviewing applications and resumes for him over the course of the next 4 years. Applicants must submit at least two letters of recommendation for advancing into the semi-final review sessions. Right now, you're just a preliminary candidate. The essay needn't be double spaced, but it should be less than 500 words long. Please make sure the margins of your paper are not greater or less than 1 inch on all four sides; also, please attach a cover sheet printed on letterhead paper with the signature of a parent, gaurdian, or wali. Also, photographs must be very halal-like.

    But enough about marriage.

Now no offense to baseball fans or baseball players themselves, but.... Kirby Puckett? I didn't even know who he was. I guess my not growing up in this country (and more specifically, this state) plays a role in me not understanding the intense sentiments that an apparently large number of people have for Mr Puckett. But that's not the point.

Now he's dead. To Allah we belong and to Him we return. Truly.

    That's the point.

    But enough about death.

I would like to reprimand Amz for writing inappropriate comments on (pretty-much) public chatrooms regarding my personal life. Allow me to bolster my reprimanding with an illustrative example of her outrageous disregard for confidentiality:

    6 Mar 06, 08:52
alg88: Lol, Sen we have to talk about YOUR hubby. And OS' hubby. I VILL find someone who can stand OS' weird habits.

When I asked her about what she meant by the phrase "weird habits", she decidedly changed it to "weird habit" and mentioned something about my liking to sleep in (on weekends , note). I now pose the questions:

    a) Is it fair to label such a normal thing as a desire to sleep in (every once in a while, or more-ha) on weekends as a weird habit?
    b) Furthermore, is it fair to discuss my personal "habits" on a public chat room, despite the fact that no one besides her, my sister, and I visit it?

I think the answer that most logical people would come up with is "no", to both questions posed.

I think my sister needs to be included in this also, for she willingly participated in a series of not-so-funny remarks about me sleeping in.

    Example:

    7 Mar 06, 00:10
Sen: LLOLZZZ.....yeah A-Lump !! looooolz....remember when we turned the music from the computer full blast so she would get up !!!

First off, the use of capital-letter acronyms to represent certain expressions, such as laughter, is "like, SO totally like not cool. LMAO." (Please note the use of quotation marks. I have to put in little notes like this because some people...just don't gettit). Second, calling one's sister rude names such as A-lump is unIslamic. I deem it necessary to give you a short lesson on respect for one's older sister. Dang it, you should be calling me "abla", if anything.

Since I am almost entirely powerless to do anything about this issue on my own, except possibly boycott these two violators of privacy, I have decided to make my grievance known to the public readership of this here blog. Perhaps together we can find a way to wipe out indecency and disregard for each other such as described above.

    Ice Cream

In Jordan, an ice cream bar could mean the world to a person.

    ---

When we were there in Winter of 2004, it was Eid al Udha..Hamza, a cousin, older than me, mentioned in one of my previous blog posts, offered to buy us some treats from the neighborhood convenience store. Ayat, Senna, Hassan, Diyaa, all placed their orders with him: chocolate bars, chips, gum, pop... Then he came to the TV room to ask me what I wanted..

"What do you want? Come on, I need to go."

    "Hmmmmmm" I said...thinking.

    "Yallah!!"

"I know! I'll have a "booza Jabri 3a shokolata (a Jabri ice cream cone; chocolate flavored)" I replied, remembering the summer days when Hamza or his brother would bring home plastic bags full of the Jabri ice creams for us.

He burst out laughing as if I had just said the funniest joke ever.

"HAHAHAHAHAHA, oh my gosh, you are such a 'habla' (stupid)!! How stupid!!! Habal habal!!"... his laughter was contagious and I started chuckling with him even though he was laughing at me. And I still hadn't figured out why he was laughing.

"They don't even SELL ice cream in the winter ya habla !!" he gasped. "That's novel!! She wants booza in the winter!! Oh gosh, why would anyone want an ice cream in the winter, for goodness sakes..."

    I learned my lesson.

"I want popcorn, then" I said. I knew that no one within a 2 mile radius sold popcorn. I wanted to irritate him.

"Popcorn!! Come on, that's ridiculous!! Why do you want popcorn...I don't know where I'll find popcorn...ufffff" he huffed and puffed; my irritation scheme seemed to have worked.

"I'm your guest cousin and you can't even get popcorn for me, Hamza? How rude. Never mind then." I looked at him sternly, then smiled and told him I didn't want anything.

He shrugged, huffed once more, then turned to leave.

    ***

His trip to the store took much longer than expected. The others were starting to get annoyed at having to wait so long. I complained jokingly about how he didn't want to get me popcorn. Ayat told me that next time we should not send Hamza to the store, since he took so long. "He probably got distracted and stopped to play soccer or talk with friends" Ayat said. I shrugged, and continued to watch TV.

When he returned, Hamza handed out the treats the others had asked for. Then he looked at me, reached into the bag, and pulled out a small paper package. He held it up proudly, and smiled genuinely. "Popcorn for you," he said.

    I felt like crying.

Or hugging him. But I couldn't do that.
